Is painting just another object? While it can alternately be matter, representation and work of art, what place and status can painting claim in the image whirlpool of a mass culture in which all images are equal and all signs equivalent? The Meaning of Stuff proposes a double take on these questions with the works of Laurent Impeduglia and Thierry Grootaers. These two belgian artists approach, each in their own way, the question of painting as matter, as pictorial iconoclasm and architecture of affects, mirroring a society in which image has become a substitute for language. Both vibrant and irreverent, their paintings stand out from the flow and demonstrate how art can help us structure the way we look at things and how we feel about them.

La peinture est-elle un objet parmi d’autres ? Elle qui peut tour à tour être matière, représentation et œuvre, quelle est sa place et son statut dans le parc à images globalisé d'une culture de masse où chaque image est l'égale de l'autre, où chaque signe est équivalent ? The Meaning of Stuff propose un double regard sur la question avec les expositions solos de Laurent Impeduglia et Thierry Grootaers. Ces deux artistes belges abordent, chacun à leur façon, la question de la peinture comme matière, comme picturalité iconoclaste et architecture des affects, en miroir d'une société dans laquelle l'image est devenue un substitut du langage. Toute deux vibrante et irrévérente, leur peinture se démarque du flux et démontre comment l'art peux nous aider à structurer notre regard sur les choses et ce que nous ressentons pour elles.
