A horizon of wild fantasies and fears, the date of December 21st 2012 has become, on the Web, the subject of an intense popular debate – zombies, aliens, ancient civilizations and secret societies are the characters of an apocalyptic mindset divided between the fear of extinction and the desire for a cleansing transformation. Borrowing from scientific as well as religious language in order to reveal a final and unavoidable unfolding, this profusion of theories testifies to the profound anxiety felt by people in front of problems that are, however, very real: from climate change to the dangers posed by new technologies; the failure of modern democracies and financial capitalism or the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction…Like a restless comic-strip of our own present, do the 2012 theories also provide us with a striking metaphor of our inability to tackle the challenges currently facing our planet? Wagering that the world will, however clumsily, go on after this doomsday, the GNF Gallery proposes to explore this strange, phantasmagorical world and the questions that underlie it through the work of several young and emerging artists. By bringing together projections, performances and debate over a period of six weeks, this exhibition styles itself as a mini-festival to celebrate the end of the year with humor and start thinking about our future.
